What Are Story Cards?

In Paralives, Story Cards are one of the game’s core narrative mechanics. Simply put, they are random event cards that appear during gameplay, constantly bringing surprises, challenges, and opportunities to your Parafolk’s lives.

If “Together Cards” are the tool you actively use to guide relationship dynamics, then Story Cards are more like “blind boxes” that life gives you—you never know what you’re going to get next.

In Early Access Build 1, the game includes a total of 76 Story Cards, distributed across five different packs.

How to Obtain Story Cards

Daily Draw

The game regularly (default, every 24 in-game hours) draws three cards from the deck for your currently active Parafolk. Each evening, you’ll be presented with three options, which may be individual Story Cards or “Books” that contain multiple cards. After you make your choice, the cards take effect the following day.

Relationship Progression Unlocks

In relationships, if you use the same type of Together Cards for multiple interactions in a row, your chosen “Storyteller” will step in and offer options to add Relationship Labels or advance the relationship level. Advancing relationship levels unlocks new “Together” cards—so when these cards appear, it’s worth accepting them.

Story Card Types and Effects

The Five Card Packs

In Early Access Build 1, the 76 Story Cards are distributed across the following five packs:

Life Goals (28 cards): These represent long-term goals from the tutorial hand.
Moon (17 cards): These provide instant rewards and one-off boosts.
Sun (16 cards): These grant 24-hour temporary buffs.
Work (10 cards): These offer career-driven rewards.
Social (5 cards): These provide group and relationship bonuses.

Rarity Distribution

All cards are divided into three rarity tiers:

Common (54 cards, Weight: 12): The most common cards.
Rare (16 cards, Weight: 4): These appear about one-third as often as Common cards.
Legendary (6 cards, Weight: 1): The rarest cards, appearing only one-twelfth as often as Common cards. Legendary cards typically offer bigger bonuses (e.g., $2000 work bonus vs. a $500 tax refund) or require specific career milestones to unlock.

Card Effects

Each Story Card contains the following elements:

The Storyteller Mechanic Explained

The game’s unique “Storyteller” mechanic is the soul of the Story Card system.

Each evening, the Storyteller deals you a set of cards that take effect the following day, granting various buffs or debuffs. Different Storytellers have different “dealing styles” that influence the types and probabilities of cards you draw.

In relationships, when you consistently use the same type of interaction cards, the Storyteller will also step in to offer relationship progression options.

The Three Storytellers

There are three Storytellers to choose from in Paralives:

Maxence

Style: Default — provides a fair and balanced experience.
Starting Funds: $30,000.
Key Traits: Balanced pacing, characters age.

Ricardo Castello III

Style: Hard mode — brings more challenges.
Starting Funds: $30,000.
Key Traits: Parafolk don’t auto-eat or use the toilet at work.

Stella

Style: Sandbox — protects from life’s lowest lows.
Starting Funds: $35,000.
Key Traits: Less challenging, sandbox flavor.

Pro Tips for Making the Most of Story Cards

Don’t be afraid to choose – There are no absolutely “right” or “wrong” choices. Different decisions lead to different life paths—that’s the beauty of “parallel lives.”
Focus on consecutive interactions – To deepen a relationship, consistently use the same type of interaction cards to trigger the Storyteller’s relationship progression options.
Prioritise the Work pack – If you want your character to climb the career ladder, choose cards from the Work Pack whenever they appear.
Check success probability – Before key interactions like flirting, hover over the target Parafolk’s icon to see the success chance and influencing factors.
Embrace complexity – The game allows contradictory Relationship Labels (e.g., “Lover” and “Enemy”). Experiment freely to create a story that’s uniquely yours.
