Paralives Cooking System Complete Guide

In Melino, cooking is about far more than just filling bellies – it’s a core life skill that affects your Parafolk’s health, happiness, and even their careers. Whether you just want to keep your family fed or aim to become Melino’s top chef, this guide covers everything about the cooking system – from how to start cooking and how to unlock all 87 recipes, to how the skill influences your gameplay.

1. Cooking Basics

What Is Cooking?

Cooking is one of the 12 basic skills in Paralives. It is a Practical Skill that levels up through actually preparing meals. Your Cooking skill level directly affects your Para’s success rate and the quality of the dishes they produce.

Cooking has a total of 20 levels.

Relationship with Food Knowledge

Cooking sits under the Food Knowledge Skill umbrella. These two skills feed into each other:

  • Higher Cooking skill lets you successfully make higher‑level recipes.
  • Higher Food Knowledge speeds up Cooking skill gain – each level of Food Knowledge gives a 25% Cooking experience bonus.
  • Conversely, leveling up Cooking also slowly raises Food Knowledge.

💡 Strategy tip: Focus on raising Food Knowledge first, then practice Cooking heavily – it makes the grind much faster.

Cooking Experience

The base experience gain for Cooking is 4 XP per hour. Each level requires 10 XP, with a 1.2 multiplier per level (so the XP needed increases gradually).

2. How to Cook

Basic Operation

  1. Click on the Fridge in your home.
  2. Select “Cook”.
  3. Choose a recipe from the list.

Your Para will automatically complete the entire process – taking ingredients from the fridge, prepping on the counter, and cooking on the stove. You only need to choose what to make; the rest is automatic.

Required Equipment

  • Minimum: You need at least a fridge and a stove (the stove is used automatically, but the interaction starts from the fridge).
  • Some recipes require a barbecue to prepare.
  • Cost: Each cooking session costs a small amount of Paradimes – group portions cost more than single portions.

Single Portion vs Group Portion

Every recipe can be made as a Single Portion or a Group Portion:

  • Single Portion: Feeds one Para. Out of 87 recipes, 81 support a single portion.
  • Group Portion: Feeds multiple members of the household. Out of 87 recipes, 50 support a group portion.

💡 Tip: A few quick recipes (like buttered toast) are only available as single portions.

Where Can You Cook?

Apart from your own home, you can also cook in any public lot that has kitchen facilities. Home is the most convenient, though – your fridge, shower, and toilet are all right there.

3. How to Raise Cooking Skill

Method 1: Cook Often (Main Way)

Cooking is the only direct way to gain Cooking experience. Every time you prepare a meal, you earn XP.

Method 2: Raise Food Knowledge

Boosting Food Knowledge indirectly speeds up Cooking skill gain. You can do this by:

  • Using a Computer and selecting “Learn about…” → “Food”
  • Reading a “Food book” from a Bookshelf
  • Cooking meals (which also raises Food Knowledge a little)

⚠️ Note: If your Para is in a negative mood or has very low needs, they will not gain Food Knowledge experience while cooking.

Method 3: Research New Recipes

On a Computer, select “Browse for new cooking recipes” to randomly unlock a new dish.

Method 4: Read the Cookbook

Visit Susan’s General Store and find the cookbook – your Para can read it to randomly learn a new recipe.

4. Recipe System

Total Recipes

Paralives Early Access Build 1 includes 87 recipes. Some sources count 92 – that’s because the recipe list was adjusted in early builds.

Recipe Categories

The 87 recipes are spread across 17 categories. The largest categories are:

  • Bakery – 14 recipes
  • Rice – 9 recipes
  • Toast – 8 recipes
  • Pizza – 8 recipes
  • Soup – 7 recipes
  • Pasta – 7 recipes

Vegetarian Options

Out of 87 recipes, 65 are vegetarian – that’s 75%. The following categories are 100% vegetarian:

  • All Soups
  • All Salads
  • All Pasta
  • All Toast
  • All Noodles

Some categories have a mix: Burgers (3 out of 6 are vegetarian), Pizza (3 out of 8), Hot Dogs (2 out of 4), Sandwiches (2 out of 4), Pies (4 out of 6).

How to Unlock New Recipes

You start with only a handful of random recipes. To unlock more, you can:

  1. Level up Cooking – each level unlocks one random new recipe until level 10.
  2. Search for new recipes on a Computer.
  3. Read the cookbook at the General Store.
  4. Choose the “Food Talent” trait in the Paramaker – this gives you one extra recipe at levels 3, 4, and 5.

💡 Note: Recipes are unlocked randomly – you cannot choose exactly which one you learn.

Recipe Level & Success Rate

Each recipe has a recipe level shown in the top‑right corner of the recipe card.

  • The closer your Cooking skill is to the recipe level, the higher your success rate.
  • If your skill is too low, cooking will fail – the dish is ruined, and there’s a risk of starting a house fire.

⚠️ Important: Always check the success rate before trying a new recipe. Click on the recipe card to see the exact percentage chance of success.

5. Uses & Rewards of Cooking

🍽️ Feeding Your Household

The most obvious use – satisfies the Hunger need. Parafolk who don’t eat won’t last long.

🎯 Life Goals & Wants

  • There are want chains related to cooking, e.g., “Cook 12 recipes within 2 hours”.
  • Completing these wants gives Personality XP.

🏘️ Community Center Donations

The Community Center’s red donation book tracks Food donations. You need to reach certain Cooking levels to make the required dishes. Some donation bundles require specific recipes:

  • Cake bundle: Confetti Cake (level 3), Cheesecake (level 6), Chocolate Cake (level 4)
  • Light meal bundle: Microwave Burger (level 1), Pasta (level 2), Ham Sandwich (level 3)
  • Gourmet bundle: Croissant (level 8), Hawaiian Pizza (level 9), Fluffy Pancakes (level 10)

💼 Career Advancement

Cooking skill is essential for applying to and advancing in:

  • Restaurant jobs: Fast Food, Sitting Restaurant, Fancy Restaurant
  • Hospital Cook

🎖️ Career Perks

Reaching certain skill milestones unlocks cooking‑related Career Perks:

  • Practice Cooking at Home – earn $30/day for each meal cooked in the last 48 hours.
  • A Great Place to Learn – 25% chance to improve Cooking skill after each workday.

🤝 Cooking Buddy

When two Parafolk cook together, they form a Cooking Buddy relationship.

  • Higher Buddy levels give greater XP bonuses.
  • level 50 Cooking Buddy provides far more XP than cooking alone.
  • High‑level Buddies also unlock co‑cooking recipes.

6. Quick Tips

  • Boost Food Knowledge first – research Food on the computer or read food books to make skill gains faster.
  • Check success rates before attempting – click the recipe card to see the percentage; don’t risk a kitchen fire.
  • Start with low‑level recipes – build your skill steadily before moving to harder dishes.
  • Cook with a friend – forming a Cooking Buddy gives extra XP, one of the most effective speed‑leveling strategies.
  • Watch Community Center donation needs – if you plan to complete those donations, plan ahead for which high‑level recipes you’ll need.
  • Keep moods positive – negative moods block Food Knowledge experience gains, so make sure your Para is in good spirits before cooking.
  • Group portions are more economical – for large households, cook group portions to feed everyone in one go.
  • Don’t ignore vegetarian options – with 65 vegetarian recipes covering most categories, there’s plenty of choice even for non‑vegetarian families.

7. Cheat Commands

If you’d rather skip the grind, open the Cheat Console (press Ctrl + F1 or Ctrl + Shift + C) and enter:

  • LEVELUPSKILL COOKING – increases Cooking skill by 1 level
  • SETSKILLLEVEL COOKING X – sets Cooking skill to the specified level (X = 1 to 20)
  • SETSKILLLEVEL KNOWLEDGEFOOD X – sets Food Knowledge to the specified level

Final Word

Cooking is one of the most fundamental and rewarding skills in Melino. From microwave burgers to gourmet cakes, from filling hungry stomachs to unlocking career perks – every meal tells a story. Master the cooking system, and your family will eat well while opening up more of the game’s possibilities.

Bon appétit!
