Paralives Aging & Death Complete Guide

In Melino, time is the one thing that’s fair to everyone – no matter how carefully you look after your Parafolk, aging and death will eventually come. The good news is that you have full control over it all. This guide covers the aging mechanics, all five causes of death, and how to keep your Parafolk alive as long as possible – or even forever.

1. Life Stages & Aging Mechanics

Eight Life Stages

Parafolk in Paralives go through 8 life stages, each with its own gameplay flavour:

  • Baby (0–1)
  • Toddler (2–4)
  • Child (5–8)
  • Pre‑Teen (9–12)
  • Teen (13–17)
  • Young Adult (18–39)
  • Adult (40–64)
  • Elder (65+)

The duration of each stage can be adjusted in the game settings.

Lifespan Settings

You can adjust stage durations in the Storyteller Settings. There are three presets:

  • Short – roughly 42 days total. Baby lasts 1 day, Young Adult 10 days, Elder 6 days.
  • Normal – roughly 91 days total. Baby 3 days, Young Adult 21 days, Elder 13 days.
  • Long – roughly 384 days total. Baby 13 days, Young Adult 87 days, Elder 55 days.

💡 You can also turn off aging entirely (see section 6) to keep your Parafolk at their current stage forever.

How to Check Remaining Lifespan

Open your Para’s profile page, click the character icon next to their name, and you’ll see their next life stage. Hover over the Lifespan Bar – the game shows exactly how many in‑game days remain. For Children and Pre‑Teens, the bar is segmented – each segment represents a growth spurt.

2. Five Causes of Death

Parafolk have 5 ways to die. Death in Paralives is rare and almost always avoidable – Parafolk will desperately try to save themselves before any of these become fatal.

1. Starvation

If a Para’s Hunger need drops to critically low levels and stays there for too long, they will starve.

  • How to prevent: Don’t let the Hunger bar enter the red zone. Food in the fridge is enough – hungry Parafolk will drop everything and find food. Only prolonged total absence of food is lethal.
  • Auto‑behaviour: At critical hunger, your Para will drop what they’re doing and go straight to food.

2. Exhaustion

When a Para ignores Sleep for too long, and their Energy bar stays at rock bottom for an extended period, they die from sheer exhaustion.

  • How to prevent: Let them sleep. Exhausted Parafolk will go to bed or nap on their own – it only becomes fatal if you keep interrupting them or there’s nowhere to rest. Beds, sofas, even the floor are better than nothing.
  • Speed: Exhaustion is the fastest non‑fire death. One player tested a household with no beds – from Monday 10:05 AM to Wednesday 3:43 PM (about 2.5 days), one Para was already dead.
  • Auto‑behaviour: At night, exhausted Parafolk will stop activities and go to sleep; during the day, they’ll take a nap rather than hit the bed.

3. Fire

A Para trapped in a fire who isn’t rescued or doesn’t put out the flames will burn to death.

  • How to prevent: Extinguish fires quickly and keep escape routes clear. Flames spread to adjacent items every ~15 minutes – put them out before they surround your Para. Burning Parafolk will fight to survive – access to water sources (shower or bathtub) is critical.
  • Fire mechanics: Fire is the only hazard that escalates on its own. Each burning item spreads every ~15 minutes; a nearby Para can catch fire in about 10 minutes; each item burns for ~5 minutes; up to 20 items can be on fire at once.
  • Auto‑behaviour: When a fire breaks out, everyone panics; burning Parafolk desperately try to save themselves. If Autonomy is on, they’ll attempt to evacuate or extinguish. Burning Parafolk gain a new need bar – the longer they burn, the shorter it gets; when empty, they die.

4. Old Age

When an Elder Para reaches the natural end of their lifespan, they pass away peacefully.

  • How to preventYou can’t. Old age is the only unavoidable death.
  • How to check: Hover over an Elder’s Lifespan Bar to see their remaining time down to hours and minutes.
  • Animation: The Elder Para will clutch their chest and then disappear, with a notification confirming natural death.

💡 Elders are immune to mushroom poisoning – only younger Parafolk are at risk.

5. Mushroom Poisoning

Eating a toxic wild mushroom can be lethal. The only known deadly mushroom is the Fly Agaric – a bright red mushroom easily spotted on Melino’s grass.

  • How to preventDon’t eat unidentified wild mushrooms. Foraged mushrooms can be poisonous – one bad one can kill.
  • How to trigger: Find a Fly Agaric, click it, and select “Eat (at your own risk)”. Your Para will become poisoned and, if left untreated, will die.
  • Who is immune: Only non‑Elder Parafolk are affected – Elders are safe.

3. Built‑In Safety Net: Parafolk Save Themselves

Before a need gets bad enough to be fatal, your Parafolk have already taken over – they’ll drop what they’re doing and fix the problem themselves. These auto‑behaviours make “neglect deaths” very hard to achieve.

Key auto‑behaviours include:

  • When hungry – drop everything and find food.
  • When exhausted (night) – stop activities and go to sleep.
  • When exhausted (day) – take a nap.
  • When bladder is critical – drop everything and sprint to the nearest toilet.
  • When hygiene is very low – other NPCs will end interactions with them.
  • When extremely bored – leave social groups and entertain themselves.
  • When extremely embarrassed – flee social situations and hide.

4. Who Cannot Die?

The game provides death protection for certain life stages:

  • Children and younger are protected from the standard death system.
  • Pregnant Parafolk cannot die while pregnant.
  • Only Teens and older are at risk of death.
  • Elders will naturally die of old age – that’s unavoidable.

5. How to Turn Off Aging

If you don’t want your Parafolk to age or die, there are several ways to turn aging off completely.

  1. Click the three dots in the top‑right corner to open the options menu.
  2. Go to the “Storyteller” section.
  3. Select “Custom Storyteller”.
  4. Under the “Time” sub‑heading, find the “Household Paras Age” toggle.
  5. Turn it off – your Parafolk will stay at their current life stage forever.

Method 2: Through Game Settings

  1. Open the game settings menu.
  2. Select the “Simulation” tab.
  3. Uncheck “Enable Parafolk Aging”.

⚠️ Important: Town Neighbour Aging

There’s one crucial detail: when you start a new game, all default Storytellers only enable aging for your current household. The “Non‑Household Paras Age” setting is off by default.

This means: if you don’t change anything, your Parafolk will age and die, but your neighbours will stay young forever. If you want the whole town to age together, you need to manually turn on Non‑Household aging.

6. Cheat Commands

If you want to skip the natural process or reverse death, open the Cheat Console (press Ctrl + F1 or Ctrl + Shift + C) and enter:

  • aging.toggle – instantly pause or resume aging.
  • killcharacter – instantly kill the selected Para.
  • reviveallselectedcharacters – revive all selected Parafolk.
  • setage [days] – set a Para’s age in days.

7. Quick Tips

  • Check Lifespan Bars often – hover over them to see remaining time down to hours and minutes.
  • Trust the auto‑behaviours – Parafolk will look after their basic needs, so you don’t need to micromanage. But if you keep interrupting their auto‑actions (e.g., cancelling sleep to work), things can go wrong.
  • Deal with fires immediately – fire is the only hazard that escalates on its own. Small fires are easy; big fires are not. Extinguish or call firefighters right away.
  • Don’t eat unidentified mushrooms – the Fly Agaric is bright red and easy to spot on green grass. If you don’t want an untimely death, avoid the “at your own risk” option for younger Parafolk.
  • Be kind to your Elders – old age can’t be prevented, so let them enjoy their final days: it’s a complete chapter of life, full of stories.
  • Pick the right Storyteller – different Storytellers have different defaults. Maxence is the standard rhythm; Ricardo is more challenging (Parafolk won’t auto‑eat or auto‑toilet at work); Stella is sandbox mode. Choose wisely.
  • Turning off aging doesn’t stop progress – your Parafolk can still gain skills, build relationships, and advance careers. They just won’t get older.
  • Sync town aging – if you want Melino to age alongside you, remember to turn on Non‑Household aging manually.

Final Word

Paralives offers a complete life arc – from baby to Elder, from the first cry to the last breath. But the real beauty is that the pace is entirely up to you. You can choose a short lifespan for fast‑paced generational play, a long lifespan for relaxed living, or turn off aging entirely to keep your beloved Parafolk forever young.

Whichever path you take, remember: death isn’t an end – it’s part of the story.

Live long!
